The Met Gala is held annually on the first Monday of May in New York, and this year it did not cease to impress us! It is a glamorous fashion show where you’ll see the most beautiful, extravagant, and some-
times the most unexpected outfits. This year’s theme: Gilded Glamour. Gold dresses, large cloaks, and sparkly, shiny clothes everywhere! Blake Lively, Stromae, Billie Eilish, The Kardashians, Pete Davidson, Lizzo; everyone chose a stunning look and wowed the crowd.
This year’s fashion show went on to celebrate the Battle of Versailles, which was a historic fashion show held in 1973 in the Palace of Versailles to raise money for its restoration. The French and American designers got into quite the rager. However, the Americans won. With their minimal, and more relaxed style, they proved to the world that America has its own fabulous sense of style.
Alright, now that we got a bit of a dive into the history, let’s look at who was actually there. Blake Lively was simply stunning. She was wearing a Versace gown that had a bit of a personal connection to it. Wearing the dress was a tribute to the New York City architecture, specifically the Empire State Building. She said, “Rather than looking at fashion from the Gilded Age, I wanted to look at architecture.” The back of the dress showcased the constellation ceiling of the Grand Central Station. Blake Lively’s first appearance on Gossip Girl was on a train, pulling up to the Grand Station, “Instead of me performing, I wanted the dress to perform.”
Next up, Lizzo. Why, she stole the show away. Each celebrity was excited to see her; all the viewers at home were excited to see her, and oh my, she did not disappoint. One headline said, “Lizzo looked like Renaissance royalty at the 2022 Met Gala.” And as if that wasn’t enough, she brought and played a rare $55,000 flute. As she was being interviewed, she told us of her new album special that will be coming July 15th! “The greatest album of all time,” she said. Well, that’s something to look forward to.
Another stunning show was Kim Kardashian. Most of the Kardashian daughters showed up, but Kim stood out just a bit more. She wore the one and only Marilyn Monroe’s dress. The same dress that Marilyn wore when she sang happy birthday to John F Kennedy. Incredible. According to Kim, when considering this year’s theme, the “most ‘American thing’ she could think of was Marilyn Monroe.” Marilyn was quite the icon, and Kim wanted to embrace the amazing woman that she was back in the 50s.
Billie Eilish, wearing a Gucci dress, made fully out of preexisting material, wooed everyone. Her black hair with the light green dress was simply perfection. It was her first time at the Met Gala, and when asked what she’s most excited for she stated, “I feel very excited to see some friends and feel less nervous. I just wanna have fun!” It was clear that everyone there came for a good time. Even with the stresses and nerves, in the end, it was a bunch of people, fabulously dressed, chit-chatting here and there.
For a final mention we have Alicia Keys. “I’m gonna shut down the whole carpet,” she said, and she definitely did that. Her fabulous “Concrete Jungle” cape captured New York City. With Ralph Lauren as the designer, they “just wanted to bring New York to the Gala.” It was spectacular.
