This past Saturday (11/19/2022,) the annual Powederpuff showdown between Swampscott and Marblehead went down. This was the tenth annual powderpuff game since it began in 2012. After four weeks of practicing, the all girl flag football teams took the field to continue our decade long rivalry.
This time around, the coaches were Jack Grady, Cody Selvais, Tucker Smith, Magnus McCarthy, Lyndan Dyer and David Bartrum. The team captains were Gwen Trimarchi, Cate Honos, Emma Hood, Lauren Allain, Camille Egan and Tamia Johnson. Swampscott quickly jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half, but was answered by Marblehead scoring a touchdown of their own. Swampscott scored once again, leaving the score at 21-7, until in the middle of the fourth quarter marblehead scored a touchdown to make it a one score game at 21-13.
After one last drive, it looked as though Marblehead may have been able to tie the game, but the clock ran out and it resulted in a loss for Marblehead. It was a great game though, and many people from Marblehead made their way over to Swampscott to watch the game. For those who couldn’t attend, the game was broadcasted to MHTV. The game didn’t go entirely smoothly however, because late in the fourth quarter Camille Egan took a bad hit and ended up breaking a leg. We all send our best wishes to Camille and hope she makes a speedy recovery. After interviewing some of the coaches, I asked how they felt about the loss. A few were mostly neutral, and were just happy that so many people turned up for the event. However, a few coaches, who will remain unnamed, ended up getting into an argument with the officials about a few of the calls, but that is very standard for any sport. Overall, it was a fantastic turnout by both Marblehead and Swampscott, and we can only hope next year it will be a Marblehead victory!
