Meet Ms. Caitlin Fields, Marblehead High School’s new Biology teacher. She teaches CPI Biology, Honors Infectious Diseases, and Honors Anatomy and Physiology. Both her degrees are from UMass Amherst, with an undergraduate degree in Public Health and a graduate degree in Epidemiology.
Ms. Fields’ first jobs were as a lab assistant and epidemiologist. However, she says, “When I was an epidemiologist, my favorite part of the job was teaching other people. I saw my chance, and I’m happy to be here.” She explains that her mother was a teacher, and she always wanted a chance to try it.
Although she grew up in Maynard, MA, she likes Marblehead’s vibe and said that everyone she’s met here is friendly and polite. She says, “Maynard was really small, and mostly forest. I’ve been to some town events, like the 4th of July celebration, and I love the community here.”
As a first year teacher, I asked Ms. Fields what her biggest goals were. She explains, “I think the most important thing is getting to know my students. Everyone has their own interests going on, and it’s fun to learn about. I enjoy supporting things they are passionate about – I’ve been to a lot of my students’ sports games, two senior nights.” In the classroom, “My goal is for everyone to be engaged, and to find something that they’re passionate about, even if it’s just my “fun facts.”‘ She does a fun fact every day to start class – her favorite one is that trees were not always biodegradable.
Finally, I asked for any fun facts she wanted to share. Her two main hobbies are baking and photography. She says, “There was this hazelnut fudge cake that I made, which is one of my favorite things. It turned out really well; it turned so nutty and sweet. But, my goal is to make a checkerboard cake.” A checkerboard cake is when you bake different cakes, cut out the middle and restack them in layers, so they look like a checkerboard. Sounds delicious!
Ms. Fields says, “I look forward to getting to know everyone better!”
