On Friday, June 15th, Marblehead High School Cancer Awareness Club will be participating in the Relay for Life at Peabody High School. As a co-president of Cancer Awareness Club, I want to inform as many people as possible about this event, encouraging anyone who’s interested in supporting our cause to join our team, or to donate!
Background: The Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, coordinated by volunteers in thousands of communities each year around the world. It is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track for 6-24 hours. Each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times, signifying that cancer never sleeps. Peabody’s Relay next weekend will begin at 4pm on Friday night, and continue through the night until 7am Saturday morning. The track becomes a campsite, as teams set up tents and prepare for a night of walking. Meanwhile, there are games, music and food of all sorts to keep relayers awake and active all night. The activities throughout the night, such as bake sales, also serve as fundraisers. Though teams fundraiser before the event itself, the relay is a way for teams to continue to gather donations.
This is the biggest event that Marblehead High School’s Cancer Awareness Club participates in each year. Last year, under the leadership of Katie Pierce, the team, named “M’headed for a Cure”, raised over $19,000. Aside from asking for donations, we welcome new team members, who would like to help us reach our fundraising goal, and also come out next Friday night for an unforgettable experience at the relay.
