This year, there are many new teachers at MHS. While some of us have had the chance to get to know them during our classes, but the majority of the student body has not. Headlight is trying to help introduce these teachers to the entire school. I had the chance to interview Ms. Blomberg, who teaches English.
Q: Which grades do you teach?
A: I teach 9th and 11th grade.
Q: What is your favorite topic to teach for each grade?
A: I enjoy working on writing (essays, creative pieces, etc.) with both grades.
Q: What is your favorite book and why?
A: I can’t choose a favorite! My favorite Shakespeare play is Richard III because he is the perfect anti-hero.
Q: If you could add any piece of writing (a poem, a novel, etc.) to the curriculum, what would it be?
A: I would love to teach some more satirical and humorous texts–maybe some Vonnegut or A Confederacy of Dunces.
Q: Is the curriculum in Marblehead different from other schools you have worked at?
A: I previously taught at Winchester High School, and there is a lot of overlap. We have similar goals and read similar texts.
Q: Do you have a favorite author?
A: Maybe William Faulkner. It’s so hard to choose a favorite!
Q: Why did you decide to be an English teacher?
A: I get to talk about books all day–it’s the perfect job.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: My favorite part of teaching is when everyone engages in a good class discussion.
Q: What is the most challenging part of being an English teacher?
A: One of the challenges of teaching English is making what’s on the page more interesting than what’s on your phones.
Q: When you were in high school, what was your favorite part of your English classes?
A: It was the same as it is now: a good class discussion.
